Geetangalie’s Weekly Response #10

Technology plays a huge role in my life which I assume is true for all millennials. Aside from being obsessed with Instagram and Snapchat and watching Youtube videos all day, technology is a vital part of my educational experience. When it comes to learning in a classroom, I have ditched the paper and pen and solely use my laptop. When it comes to finding various educational articles for a paper I never go to a library and physically choose a book but instead use something like the CUNY database. This has become so useful for me as I feel technology helps you to have a more clear understanding while studying. I do not have to worry about not being able to read what I wrote or flipping through hundreds of pages looking for one word. The meme I created is captioned “When the WiFi stops working in the middle of uploading to blackboard.” I made this meme to also show the faultiness there is with technology, speaking in opposition to what I  have said. Although technology may seem perfect and obviously can do much more than the human ability, there are times when it can mess up too.

After seeing the film, I didn’t feel very well. Technology is an integral part of our everyday lives. But in “Her,” I found that technology isn’t all good for us. In this more and more rapid progress of technology, human beings have been able to put a lot of things to technology to complete, will make us lazy. Although technology has made our life more convenient, it has completely changed our lives. For example, usually we can go out to chat and play, but now the mobile phone can solve everything. The entertainment aspect can already use the computer to solve.

The next step in technology may be robots. In the movie, it makes me feel terrible to show how technology can do what humans can do. If we invent this kind of robot in the future, make sure it’s controllable. If they have emotions and can do everything we humans can and cannot do. Will it take our place as masters of the world? Of course, this kind of thing is two sides, it can coexist peacefully, the benefits will be great. However, this kind of uncertainty will still make me feel afraid if it is possible. And the meme for this is I can’t believe that if a robot is living in our daily and it looks like a human.

In my opinion, the use of technology has both positive and negative consequences.

For example, the use of computers and the internet has made my life much easier. It is very easy to communicate with other people using a computer. In addition, classes can be taken on the internet right from the comfort of my own home. I also use the internet to make purchases.

There are also some negative effects of using technology. Using computers and the internet to communicate takes away from communicating with people face to face. I wonder what this is doing to communication skills. In addition, people sometimes develop addictions to things like online gambling because of its convenience.

This meme shows how one day there will be a place where AI robots will coexist with humans and they will have relationships with humans, and this can cause many problems socially. People might not be willing to accept you for having an AI has a partner or a spouse. Other problems that can arise is that AI robots are just machines and they don’t lack the same emotions that a person does, so this brings up the notion if their emotions are real or just made up from what they have seen around them and experienced. This can be seen in the movie “Her” were the AI was able to learn about emotions and love through the interactions with humans. At the end we find out that the AI wasn’t really in love because you can’t be in love with more than one person at a time and expect the other person to be okay with that. AI are one day going to take over the world and cause the downfall for humans. Today, technology is advancing at an exponential rate and it isn’t stopping any time soon. We already have ways to program AI’s to be able to recognize voice patterns and copy them exactly. This is one of the many ways that technology has advanced from a decade ago were going onto the internet required you to have a phone line and only one person at a time can be on the line, either calling or using the internet.

After watching the video, for me it is very interesting to see how technology are able to do what human can do. Feel the emotion and how they falling in love with human being. In the sense, it feel like it kind of replace some people. Maybe in some way technology seem to be out of control because it is doing everything human can and can’t do, which can frighten people. There can be many different view such as some think tech should be in control of human, some think tech is our friend who help our development of society, some think tech will replace and take over human, some think tech help make things easier … There can be many different view on it, we can’t judge right now for what is wrong or not. Things can turn out in both good and bad way. Both might be turn but the good for someone might not seem as good for other.

Weekly Response 10

My relationship with technology is a mixed bag. Sometimes I find it fascinating, allowing me to navigate the world with ease. Most of the time I feel behind and frustrated as technology more so then ever moves at a rapid pace. Every day it seems more difficult to stay up on the trends of technology today. I think the older you get the less you can digest. Sometimes I can even feel intimidated. Like most people though I struggle up front and once I gain confidence I excel. I love my iPhone and the convenience it offers but get irate with constant updates and often feel my phone runs more clunky after I accept them. My real challenge is desk tops. When I was younger, and computers were becoming a house hold item I ate them up. I soaked up all the information I could and believe I was far ahead of the average person in this regard. Although youth do hold an advantage in their technological retention, I feel over the years I have strayed from the well, like most. Whenever I am in a computer heavy class, I feel panicked and unsure of myself. The GIF I have created shows the frustration I find myself dealing with when faced with technology these days.

QianXing’s Weekly Response #10

After watching this movie, it makes me feel very uncomfortable. The main character in the story is dating with an IOS.  I don’t really have an experience about that online, so I don’t really understand how it feels of loving someone online. In addition, it is not loving a real person, the main character fall in love with an IOS, it is a machine. Not a human being. Even though I don’t have experience involved with technology, my friends do. He has a girlfriend who is currently in China, and he lives in the U.S. Therefore, the only way they can see and communicate with each other is by using face time or social media.  I ask him about how he feels about this kind of relationship. He told me that it is really hard to keep in touch since they are in two different countries. The time zone is different, everything is different. If they don’t truly love each other, there is no way they are able to continue their relationship.

I think the above MEME represents my opinion to technology because I thought technology is supposed to make our life easier. However, based on what I have watched, it is hurting people. The technology is advanced to a point where it can do everything that a human can do, such as talking with another human, having emotions.  It can also do something that humans cannot do, such as reading a 10000 words document in a second. This is crazy. I can’t imagine that one day technology will able to do those things. It frightens me because we are supposed to control technology, but if they become super smart, can we still control them? In the movie “Her”, the IOS doesn’t seem to be controlled by the main character. Therefore, I just feel like if technology is so advanced just like what happens in the movie, it will be insane!

decision meme that says "text friend from the comfort of my own bed" or :go out and meet her face to face"

What technology means to me

I think this meme accurately represents my relationship between technology and myself. This is because in my opinion, technology attempts to make everything easier for people therefore inadvertently making everyone lazy by nature. There are times where me and my friend both arent doing anything and we could go out and enjoy the weather and talk to each other face to face but instead we sit at home, in our beds and just text each other. Technology makes everything easier, in this case communicating with my friends, but lowers the frequency of meeting people outside of the touchscreen.

WEEK 10

Posted by Carlton Yuan on

Growing up in a world with technology, I can’t imagine living in a world without it. I use my phone every day to listen to music, use social media and the internet. I use my computer to do homework and watch movies. I also love playing video games and watching movies on my PlayStation. Although I love technology, I would not want it to consume my life. The movie Her is an example of how technology could consume a person’s life. Theodore fell in love with an AI named Samantha. I agree with Catherine that Theodore does not know how to deal with real human emotions. I remember learning in Anthropology class that Humans learn from each other and are very social creatures. Humans depend on other humans for survival. Although I love playing video games, I would much rather have human interactions than staying at home all day and playing video games by myself. Part of the reason why I love playing video games is that I get to play and talk with my friends. I rarely play videogames if my friends are not online. I believe that in the future there will be sports for robots. They already have some competitions with robots but they are not really advanced and it is not really popular. Imagine a team of robots playing basketball, soccer, football. One day there will be an NBA, NFL, and MLS for robots.
